# Algorithm designer vs. coder

Hello John and hello to everyone

Some of the top names in algorithm design do not know how to code! I worked with them in number occasions for number of years. So John you do not need to be a fancy programmer to design algorithms.

Specific to this field of climate, we need a designer of algorithms with mathematical prowess, coding is easy enough.

Comment Source:Well, I may someday be able to design interesting algorithms in this field! Yesterday I went to a tutorial on [Climate change: challenges for machine learning](http://nips.cc/Conferences/2014/Program/event.php?ID=4267), and it was full of interesting ideas. They mentioned an annual workshop called [Climate Informatics](http://www.climateinformatics.org/?q=node/41), which will be held next on September 25-26 in Boulder, Colorado. If I decide I'm serious about software and climate science, I'll go! (I'm still a bit hesitant.)
