We've got some spam:

Someone added the link

[chaco](http://www.zbsports.com/)

to How to get started. The revision was made by Anonymous Coward on January 20, 2011 00:26:47.

I don't know if this is enough information for Andrew to block the relevant IP address, or if that's even the best strategy. What's the routine over on the nLab?

I've fixed the page; the link takes you back to the vandalized version.

More spam advertising the same website on the page Azimuth Project on January 20, 2011 01:07:06 from the IP address 208.75.10.242:

    [mizuno](http://www.zbsports.com/)

Andrew: can you block this IP address?

Hmm, the IP address was visible when I first saw the page, but not anymore, not even when I 'roll back' to that version. That seems suboptimal!

If I want to do something useful here, but I have no idea as to what, I just go to Recently revised and check what the "cowards" have changed. In this way spam is easily caught :)

Had a bit of subtle spam on the nLab so thought I'd check to see if it was here as well, and it was. Someone was embedding links as punctuation! They got three pages here (HowTo, Conferences, Azimuth Project). In each case, I rolled it back to the previous version. Since this was three pages here and five on the nLab, I've blocked the IP.

Thanks for catching the latest spam, Tim.

"How to help" never had anything interesting on it; we've already got Open projects serving roughly the same purpose, so I just got rid of that page by renaming it Lester Brown and putting in some info about him.

Last Monday someone again wrote spam on the homepage. Luckily it has already been removed by another anonymous coward.

The version with the spam is this one

    The spammer used this identification:

Revision from November 14, 2011 11:25:48 by Frederik De Roo

Is there a method to find the IP address of the spammer in Andrew's database?

By the way, I am starting to think that from now on I can better add stuff to the wiki anonymously, because my name has lately been abused quite often.

You can see the IP addresses from the history page. In this case, http://www.azimuthproject.org/azimuth/history/HomePage.

Given that no-one's come up with any objections to me changing the names in the database, I'll start doing that.

My personal opinion is that you editing anonymously is the wrong solution.

Probably you are right that I shouldn't give in and should still use my own name. I was also thinking of adding a line "not all changes under my name are necessarily by me" in my authors page, but in some sense, this should be obvious for people of good understanding, so I'll just leave it as it is.

Tim Porter (on the nForum) spotted some spam from similar IPs. Looking at the database, there's a range of IPs that have only been used to spam, but the actual IP keeps shifting. I've therefore blocked the entire range. This might or might not be a good idea!

    The range is 124.6.181.X.

How does the rollback work again?

First click Back in time at the bottom of a page, repeatedly if necessary, until you get to the version you want. Then click Rollback at the bottom of the page. Then you'll get thrown into edit mode. Then save the page.

I did it for you, so I could remember out how to do it!

I just removed some white text spam again on the Home Page. PS. for John, I am enjoying Granada this month!

(Later: I have come back to the Home Page and found that someone has re-added that spam under my name. Can someone please spike this idiot as it wastes a lot of time.) The details are May 24, 2012 19:09:17 by Tim Porter (173.254.216.66) . I think the same person just hit the nLab as well.

(The IP number when I rollback is not the correct one, which should start 150. It is correct when I do the equivalent rollback on the nLab. Is there a reason or a glitch?)

(Edit: This spam was repeated this morning 25 May from a new address. They used my name but from 66.230.230.230.)

It is even more fun to see the way that the Moors managed the water. We have been living in the Albaicin for the last three weeks and I have been exploring again some of the hills behind the Alhambra. The system of canals and conduits is remarkable. I think the archaeologists are still trying to investigate them and find their plan. With climate change those old robust systems need to be understood and probably copied (after updating perhaps).

Ah, that one's discovered Azimuth as well.

This spammer is working via a relay so I can't block them by IP. I have to block them by the content that they are trying to post. I don't think that this content would come up in the normal content of Azimuth, but I can't guarantee it! So if ever you find yourself editing and get the message that your post was blocked by the spam filter, maybe you hit the key phrase without realising it.

For hopefully obvious reasons, I'm not going to post the exact pattern it tests against ...
