Here is an annotated set of El Nino and La Nina events prior to 1950. In contrast to those shown above post-1950, these are not sorted according to Strong, Medium, and Weak, so "s" is used everywhere.

Just a few peculiar excursions noted by ?. Some modeled oscillations are noted during the late WWII years which are distinctly out-of-phase with the data. The modeled valley at 1949 didn't register as an El Nino as the SOI data was weaker. A La Nina peak at 1934 didn't register either.
Other than that, it looks as if all documented La Nina and El Nino events match to a modeled SOI peak and valley, respectively. The El Nino at 1912 was only modeled as a shoulder dip.
